CONNECTICUT YANKEE ATOMIC POWER COMPANY
Land Conservation at the Connecticut Yankee Nuclear Power Plant

Connecticut Yankee Atomic Power Company (CY) is decommissioning its 600 MW nuclear power plant along the shores of the Connecticut River in Haddam Neck, Connecticut. CLF Ventures assisted CY by exploring the donation of a portion of the plant's property to a government or non-profit entity for conservation.
The goal is to preserve approximately 400 acres of forests, fields and wetlands and to put in place management systems to protect the many resources on the property.

CLF Ventures' role in the land conservation project has been two-fold: (1) CLFV served to legitimize CY with the stakeholder community regarding the closure and disposition of the 400 acres of woodlands surrounding the plant; and, (2) CLFV advised CY on technical matters associated with property disposition, including ALTA surveys, natural resource assessments, and archeological reconnaissance efforts.

To that end, CLF Ventures has developed a stakeholder outreach plan and a communication strategy, particularly targeting plant neighbors and minority (African American and Native American) constituents. CLFV has conducted site investigation and assessment, including an ALTA boundary survey and topographical mapping; natural resource (flora and fauna) inventories, assessments and management plans; and archeological and cultural resource inventories, assessments and management plans. Lastly, CLFV developed a property disposition strategy.

At this time, site closure is well underway and the stakeholder community is engaged in property transfer. Completion of site remediation and demolition is scheduled for 2006, at which time disposition options will be finalized.
